Contextual Fit
We are to build an addition to a well-known home on the Long Island Sound for this project. Architect Richard Meier created the original house in 1965; it has been extensively documented and is well-known worldwide. To maintain the integrity of the original design, the addition must provide evidence that the systems and patterns already present in the house were examined and taken into account during the design process.

Narrative

The Cooper family is moving from New York City to the Smith House on the shore of Long Island Sound. The new owner of this house, Mr. Cooper, is an art collector and is passionate about Georges Vantongerloo’s art, especially his sculptures. He has a large family and wants a new addition that stands out from the existing house and will respect the integrity of the original design while also referencing a Vantongerloo sculpture. There will be a family room, exercise room, and a master suite which will provide the additional space required by the large family. Because of the move from the city, the family is enthusiastic about having the additions be in tune with nature, they want the family room to have an excellent view of the outdoors. Everyday the family would love to come together to start their day with a big open view of the Long Island Sound.
